On Saturday, 31 August, The Mission Transition Foundation of San Antonio presented a check in the amount of $5,000.00 in recognition of first-responders in Remembrance of 911 to the Paladin Community Center to support Real and Edwards County first-responders and their families. Presentation was made at the Rocksprings, Edwards County Volunteer Fire Department 7th Annual Fish Fry, Goat Roping and Rodeo fundraising event. Accepting the check was Real County Sheriff Nathan Johnson and Edwards County Sheriff Pamela Elliott. Presentation remarks were made by “Chief” Leo Silva, one of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Mission Transition. Check presentation was made by Mission Transition’s President and Director, Natalie DePeña. Assisting in the presentation was Mission Transition’s Founder and Board Chairman Bo DePeña. Also present was Mission Transition Board member Nancy Sue Copple of Pioneer Real Estate, Leakey, Texas.
The funds donated are earmarked to support first-responders and their family members who are affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) for emergency short term needs in keeping with the Mission Transition goals and vision. The funds will be distributed as the need arises by the Paladin Community Services a 501(c)(3), nonprofit.
In his remarks, Chief Silva commented “Texas is home of one of the highest numbers of combat veterans in the United States with 1 out of 3 suffering from PTSD. These unfortunate statistics emphasize the value of Mission Transition’s vision and how our program is vital in aiding our Nation’s Heroes in their recovery. Not included in these statistics are our first-responders, law enforcement officers, firemen, para-rescue, EMS, doctors, nurses and others. These courageous and brave men and women are critical to the safety and security of our great Nation.”
Other heroic first-responders in attendance included: Edwards County Volunteer Fire Department Chief Eddie Franco, Edwards County EMS Karrah Epperson, Edwards County Deputies Adrian Ruiz and K9 Deputy Felix Ruiz Jr.
